GEORGETTE

ELINOR RADLEY

GEORGETTE

In the dream cube, I saw an anaconda---

ELINOR RADLEY

You’re not serious---!

GEORGETTE

It was an anaconda that ate---

ELINOR RADLEY

Why do you think they call it a dream cube?  It wasn’t real!

GEORGETTE

ELINOR RADLEY

There are drug lords a few acres over.  It was them.  They hate lesbians.

COUNTESS VAN DER CAVE

What gall . . .

            (She falls asleep.)

ELINOR RADLEY

And now it’s our turn . . . for revenge!

            GRACE, come up from behind to console her.)

GEORGETTE

GRACE

            (The PANTHER LADY rubs against ANNIE.)

COUNTESS VAN DER CAVE

I hate to see people die.  People I know, that is.

FOOFEE

But what killed her?

COUNTESS VAN DER CAVE

Who knows, in this jungle?

FOOFEE

So much slime, and the puncture bites---

            (ELINOR RADLEY has been, all this time, in the background, thinking, 

            contemplating.  She comes forward.)

ELINOR RADLEY

As if you don’t know---

            (ANNIE whirls around, with red in her eye.)

ANNIE

What?

ELINOR RADLEY

Men!  It was MEN!

            (They shudder.  It’s cold now with the fire out.)

Why am I standing here, still, frozen?  Why did the Panther Lady put out that fire?  Shouldn’t I be throwing myself on something? plunging into something, waiting to be sealed up forever?  Is there a parapet I can . . . ?  No.  Lonnie lies and I stand.  And the moment, just past, seems so fresh---that moment when she was still alive.  Like I can grab the gears of this wicked clock and jerk that moment back.  But it ticks farther away, farther . . .  Oh, Lonnie.

            (The COUNTESS makes to examine the body.)

COUNTESS VAN DER CAVE

What am I looking for again?

FOOFEE

Allow me, Countess.  You are looking for breath.  What the Greeks would call spirit.  A sign that this rusty habitation still has some ghost rattling around within.

COUNTESS VAN DER CAVE

            (To FOOFEE)

You’re beautiful.

FOOFEE

She’s dead.

            (The PANTHER LADY bays some more.)
